Welcome, Introduction

Dave McMahon, President of the Oriole Park Association, welcomed everyone to the OPA Annual General Meeting, virtual zoom.

Lynne Frank, facilitator, thanked everyone for attending. She introduced our first speaker, the Hon. Jill Andrew, MPP (Toronto-St. Paul’s) NDP. Jill Andrew has been a critic in support of women and encouraging social opportunities. She brought us        up-to-date about Queen’s Park and our St. Paul’s district.

Lynne Frank

Our next speaker was Noah Ross who is with Councillor Josh Matlow’s office. Thank you very much for being here.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the Oriole Park Association. It’s been fairly quiet over the past year. Condo development has basically ground to a halt. Sammy’s Garage has finally come close to completion. For Rockport, the Manor Road parkette is getting done. The first residents are anticipated to move there in March 2025.

Regarding the Eglinton Avenue West condo development at Starbucks, on the north side, there have been quite a few protests. We have people who are still actively protesting it. We started with a petition. There are 814 names on it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t count because the OLT needs verification of every signature.

The surprising aspect is that from that petition, no one stepped forward to challenge that condo development.

We wondered where the petition came from. We found out that it was the ‘Eglinton Way’ community.

Major news is that the Yitz Bakery project, the northwest corner of Avenue Road and Eglinton Avenue West, is in bankruptcy. It has defaulted on $53 million dollars in mortgages.  Who knows who the next owner will be?

Traffic safety has been an important issue, traditionally, in our community. The last meeting we had, there were 27 people on the Traffic Safety Committee. Our first meeting began in December 2021. It’s been over two years and people want to have the next meeting. As an example, in Leaside, their Traffic Safety Plan was approved 1½ years ago, but nothing happened.

We have to keep advocating for small traffic issues as a preferred strategy.

Sadly, it took us up to 12 years from start to finish on some of these projects.

Jim Baker of the ARECA ratepayer association worked on the “Eglinton Today” project about bicycle lanes. We have concerns about the layouts.

There is a problem with the right hand turn off Eglinton Avenue onto Avenue Road north. There is an issue with street design.

Lynne Frank

Thank you very much, Dave. Do I have a motion to approve the previous OPA minutes on our website?  Motion approved.

Dave McMahon

Richard MacFarlane had a brief statement about our Past President, the Hon. Roy McMurtry.

Paul Nimigon – Toronto Police Services Liaison Committee

As you know, I am the Toronto Police Services 53 Division representative. I am pleased to be on that committee. The last meeting was on September 29th, 2024.  Shelley Ortved was there as well.  There was a good mixture of people and ideas.

The Toronto Police Services Open House was excellent. The TPS was pleased with the turnout. They handed out scholarships. This will continue next summer.

They have developed a community crisis response program. I’m impressed. It’s up on our OPA website. It’s a great support service offered by the City of Toronto.

This is “Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month.” That will be posted to our community. Putting it on our OPA website will be perfect.

There will be a fund-raiser on Sunday December 8, 2024 at First Canadian Place in Toronto. It will be an opportunity to meet our Toronto police officers, in person, and to discuss your concerns.

Tickets are $50.00.  (We didn’t do this last year). The OPA has already purchased            5 tickets.  It’s a good conduit for our OPA association, to share experiences and generate ideas.

Paul Nimigon – Break and Enters

The Toronto Police Services post ‘break and enters’ in real time on their website. They said that we should make sure that people know how to download their security cameras. Sometimes, the police arrive, and they ask the homeowner about security footage, and want to download it. But the homeowner doesn’t know how, and this can be a problem.
