    What Work is Taking Place?

    • Mining excavation works continue at the secondary entrance of Avenue Station, with crews operating between Eastbourne Avenue and Lascelles Boulevard. As part of these works, crews are required to break away the temporary inner walls of the cavern, to finalize the station structure. 
      Inner wall demolition will resume as early as Wednesday, April 1, 2020 and will occur 24 hours a day for approximately one (1) week. Periodic chipping and removal of concrete can be expected, while this work takes place.
      During these works, nearby properties may experience noise and/or vibration. Crews will endeavor to complete these works during the day, however due to the sequence nature of the work, occasional overnight work may be required. If you experience disruption from mining activities, please call our 24/7 phone line at 416-782-8118. 

    Hours of Work

    • As early as Wednesday, April 1, 2020 for approximately one (1) week.
    • Work will take place on a 24-hour basis.
    • Work may be delayed or rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

    Community Groups,

    Despite several requests & warnings to social distance or self isolate (travel) etc., there are members of the public defying these orders & removing barricades, warning tape along with packing parks & beaches gathering in large unacceptable groups.

    This has caused the City of Toronto to request a significant increase in enforcement , to keep people out of parks, playgrounds, beach areas or from forming groups larger then 5 people.

    Please encourage your members & neighbours to share this email , please obey the law, we don’t want to have to use limited resources to chase people around whom aren’t following the guidelines.

    Update On COVID-19: Friday, March 27th

    Dear Residents,

    This a follow-up to my last update to you on the COVID-19 pandemic with recent government announcements and a focus on several of our community’s priorities.

    First of all, I hope this finds you and your family healthy and well. I know that this is an extremely difficult and even surreal experience for us all. But I’m convinced that if we work together, even at a physical distance, we can flatten the curve and save lives.

    I’m proud of how so many people have taken the advice of our Public Health experts, and are self-isolating when necessary and practicing social distancing- keeping at least 6 feet apart.

    However, there are still some people who haven’t gotten the message. Each of us has a choice to make, we can either be part of the solution, or be a serious part of the problem. There’s no in between.

    I’m inspired by the people who are helping keep our society running, such as the grocery clerks and waste collectors. And I’m deeply grateful to our healthcare workers who are making personal sacrifices and risking their lives to save ours.

    I’ll continue to do everything possible for our physical and mental health, and advocate for your financial viability to make ends meet, so that we can all get through this together.

    And thank you to so many of you who have been looking out for your neighbours, and doing everything you can to help each other through this challenging time. I really love our community.

    Upcoming TTC Line 1 Closure for Berwick Portal Construction - Sunday March 29, 2020

    What Work is Taking Place?

    Since 2019, a series of closures of TTC’s Line 1 subway have taken place to accommodate construction a facility service building for Line 1 at Berwick Avenue and Yonge Street.  On Sunday March 29, 2020, TTC’s Line 1 subway will be closed between St. Clair and Lawrence stations while crews perform hydro support beam installation and reinforcement at the track and platform level.  Berwick Avenue will remain open while this work takes place.

     

     

    Hours of Work

    • Sunday March 29, 2020

    • Crews will work 24 hours during the subway closure

    • Please note that this work is subject to cancellation

     

    TTC Details

    TTC Line 1 subway will be closed on Sunday March 29, 2020 between St. Clair and Lawrence stations.  Please visit TTC’s website www.ttc.ca, under “Scheduled Subway Closures” for more information on subway closures and shuttle bus operation. 

     

    What to Expect

    • Existing construction zones and laydown areas on Berwick Ave will remain in place

    • Noise from large construction equipment, heavy truck traffic entering and exiting the work zone, equipment and material storage within work zones, as well as lighting can also be expected.

    • All property access is expected to be maintained

    • Expect delays when travelling in the vicinity of Berwick Ave during each closure.

     

    Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts

    • All pedestrian routes will remain the same

    What Work is Taking Place

    •  Mining excavation in continues between Eastbourne Avenue and Lascelles Boulevard. This sequence includes drilling roof supports, removal of earth and coating exposed surfaces with shotcrete. Mining excavation is expected to be complete in July 2020. 

     

    •  Approximately three concrete pours take place every week lasting 12 – 18 hours each.  The concrete forms the station structure below grade.  Some pours require temporary use of the westbound curb lane, west of the Main Entrance.  The lane will re-open after each pour is complete. 

     

    What Work is Coming Up?

    • Demolition of the inner station walls is expected to resume on April 10, 2020 and will occur 24 hours a day for approximately one (1) week.  Nearby properties may experience noise and/or vibration.

     

    Mining Information


    General mining activities occur in a continuous sequence, including drilling roof supports, excavation under the roof supports and spraying of concrete to finalize exposed areas underground. Within the excavation portion of the sequence, periodic removal of concrete sections of the existing tunnels is required as well as periodic chipping of temporary concrete linings. When possible, crews complete higher impact works during the day, however due to the sequence nature of the work and the engineering requirements related to ground stability and cavern integrity, sometimes noticeable activity occurs overnight.

    Noise & Vibration Mitigation


    Noise and vibration impacts to your building depend on your proximity to the source and how the vibrations travel through the soil and interact with the foundation and structure of your building. Crosslinx Transit Solutions has implemented several noise reductions measures on site to mitigate the impact felt by the community during mining activities. Enclosures are used to cover equipment like generators and pumps, silencers are used to reduce noise from fans, and delivery routes and times are selected to minimize disruption – just to name a few.

    Monitoring Work
    Equipment installed in various locations around the station are used to monitor ground movement during construction.
    Read the construction notice for more detail.
    • A drill is used to install monitoring equipment around the station area.

     

    • Short duration closures are used to obtain readings from the monitors.

     

    • If on the sidewalk, pedestrians may be rerouted around the work area

     
    • Periodic installations will occur over the course of construction

  • PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS DURING THE COVID-19 FROM 53 DIVISION

    This information has been provided by our local Toronto Police Service 53 Division and will be important to small business owners in the Oriole Park / Chaplin Estates area.

     

    PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

    The closure of non-essential businesses within Ontario may cause businesses to worry about the safety of their business properties. We are sharing the following crime prevention tips for businesses within 53 Division, in order to help them stay safe and secure.

    •        Remove all valuables from storefront displays to help reduce smash-and-grab thefts;

    •        Remove all valuables such as cash from the till and leave it open. Place cash tray in plain view on the counter to signal there’s no money in the till;

    •        Remove signage from front windows so police can see the inside unobstructed during patrols;

    •        Consider installing an alarm monitoring system. If you already have one, ensure the contact list is upto-date;

    •        Clearly post signage on the door/window to indicate that the premises are monitored by an alarm company; that no money is kept on the premises and contact information for police and the business owner in case a member of the public sees damage to the property or suspicious activity;

    •        If the premises are closed for an extended period of time, clean all glass surfaces and create a tracking log of when cleaning was completed. This may help investigators with suspect fingerprints in the event of a break-in;

    •        Consider installing a surveillance camera system that can be monitored online by owner/management;

    •        Consider using a laminate on all windows and glass doors to prevent the glass from being broken from blunt force. Although damage to glass will occur in a break-in attempt, it will greatly discourage or prevent entry;

    •        Install latch guards on doors to protect against prying including on secondary doors such as employee and loading entrances;

    •        Keep some lighting on inside for surveillance opportunities during the evening;

    •        Ensure all doors are properly secured and regularly check all exterior lighting is functioning; and

    •        Remove material around the exterior of the property that may be used to gain entry

     

    Hopefully these tips will help keep your business secure during the current unique circumstances we find ourselves in.

    What Work is Taking Place?


    Since March 16, 2020, crews have been performing chipping away concrete at the east limit of the Chaplin Station box.  Chipping will continue through Tuesday March 31, 2020, while crews demolish a concrete pile wall between the Tertiary Entrance and station box, located on the south side of Eglinton Avenue adjacent the old fire hall.  Using an excavator and jackhammer, concrete will be removed from grade level to beneath the station roof.  This activity will take approximately 1.5 weeks to complete.  Chipping occurs periodically during deep excavation sequence.  Noise and vibration can be expected.
     

    Hours of Work

    • This activity will take place between 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. until approximately March 31, 2020
    • Work may be longer or shorter than expected, and may be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances

    We are all going through a very unusual and difficult time and the Board Members of the O.P.A. want to let you know that we are thinking of all our neighbours.

    We have been instructed to wash our hands, not touch our face, especially our nose and eyes, and remain a distance from others.  Physical distancing poses a challenge for all of us , but there are some things we can do:

    We can go out for walks and ride our bikes with our children and other family members  along the quiet side streets, and on the Kay Gardner Beltline Trail.

    While we are walking we can think about community and look out for our neighbour’s safety and security in line with our upcoming Neighbourhood Watch Program. Be safe, be aware and communicate.

    On Thursday, March 26, 2020, crews will perform a concrete pour at the main entrance of Avenue Station. The concrete will form one of the permanent station structures underground. To safely carry out the works, westbound traffic on Eglinton Avenue West will be reduced to one lane at the Main Entrance. The pour will begin at 6:00 a.m. and take approximately twelve (12) hours to complete.  After the pour is complete, the lane will re-open. 
     

    Hours of Work

    • The pour will begin at 6:00 a.m. and take approximately twelve (12) hours to complete.
    • Work may be delayed or rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY ISSUES

As we all know our neighbourhood is subject to serious development pressure, and development issues have occupied much of the board’s time. Among these issues are:

Community Development Committee of Adjustment – Single Family Homes

The OPA keeps a close eye on applications for home renovations and tear- downs in our neighbourhood.

We receive details about applications from the Committee including a description of the proposed changes and the deadline for submitting to the committee. Metrolinx – Eglinton LRT

The OPA is involved in the ongoing process of the development of the new Light Rail Transit line in our area.

One major concern for the community is that Eglinton Avenue is to have restricted lanes westbound between Oriole Parkway and Braemar Avenue for the construction of the Avenue Road Station.

The proposals as detailed below will last until 2021.

The businesses on the north side will have very restricted access and visibility.

The second concern is that Metrolinx in their initial proposal wished to ‘clear cut’ the area on the south side of the North Toronto Community Center between the eastern driveway and the western boundary beside the ‘Art Barn’ building. The area is to be used for storage and construction vehicles

The OPA community involvement is:

  • We attend meetings on behalf of the membership and community as well as sit on a ‘working group’ Chaired by Councillor Cristin Carmichael-Greb (Ward 16) and as supported by our Councillor Josh Matlow ( Ward 22).
  • The working group is comprised of elected officials; Senior City of Toronto Staff including Metrolinx and Crosslinx staff. The local residents associations are represented by the Eglinton Avenue Road Community Association: the Eglinton Park Ratepayers Association as well as the OPA.
  • We will provide updates via our Twitter and Facebook Accounts as well our email subscribers as they come available.
