  • TTC OVERNIGHT CONSTRUCTION IN OPEN CUT BETWEEN EGLINTON /DAVISVILLE. BE PREPARED FOR NOISE!

    Hello,

    I have just learned of some scheduled overnight maintenance work north of Davisville Station starting tonight for approximately 2 to 3 weeks. As part of its preventative and corrective maintenance program, TTC will be carrying out wood-tie replacement in the open-air section between Davisville and Eglinton stations. The work, which can only take place when the subway is not operating, will range from replacing ballast (stones), replacing wood ties and tamping new ballast to secure the track system in place. The work is essential to maintain the track in state of good repair and ensure a safe and smoother subway operations through the area.

    In support of this work, subway service on Line 1 between Lawrence and Bloor-Yonge stations will end nightly at 11 p.m. on May 25 to 28. Regular subway service will resume each morning at approximately 6 a.m. These early subway closures will allow crews to expedite the wood-tie replacement work, which would normally take up to 5 weeks of nightly activity between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. to complete.

    A subway work-car will be used nightly at track level between the work location to vacuum up/remove the old ballast (stones) and expose the wood-ties that support the tracks. Noise can be expected when some equipment and subway work-cars are in full operation.

    Notice of Chaplin Crescent Road Closure for Traffic Bridge Removal Works-
    June 2020

    What Work is Taking Place?


    As early as June 1, 2020, Chaplin Crescent will be closed between Eglinton Avenue and Russell Hill Road for approximately five (5) weeks while crews perform traffic bridge removal works at the intersection.  The Chaplin-Russell Hill laneway will also be closed.  Construction activities will include removal of the existing traffic bridge, back-filling, reinstatement of utilities and paving. 
     
    One lane of traffic in each direction on Eglinton Avenue will be maintained.  Local access will be maintained from the south end of the closure and the east end of the laneway.  Upon completion of the work, Chaplin Crescent and the Chaplin-Russell Hill laneway will re-open.  Significant traffic changes will be in effect.  Please carefully review the Traffic and Pedestrian Details below.
     

    Hours of Work

    • As early as June 1, 2020, Chaplin Cres will be closed for approximately five (5) weeks
    • Traffic bridge removal work will take place between 6:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., Monday – Sunday
    • The contractor may not always work during these hours, but may do so at its discretion
    • The closure may be in place longer or shorter than expected

    • Noise from use of a crane, excavator, trucks, compactor and other heavy equipment
    • Site lighting will be required
    • Truck staging within work zones, traffic tapers and on the median north of Eglinton Ave
    • 24 hour deep excavation work will continue during closure into mid-June 2020
    • Motorists can expect delays when travelling through the intersection

    Traffic & Pedestrian Details

    • Chaplin Cres will be closed between Eglinton Ave and Russell Hill Rd
    • The Chaplin-Russell Hill laneway will be closed
    • One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on Eglinton Ave
    • Southbound traffic on Chaplin Cres will be required to turn left or right at Eglinton Ave
    • The west crosswalk will be removed and the north crosswalk will be reinstated
    • The south crosswalk will be shifted further south
    • Parking on Russell Hill Rd will be temporarily prohibited to accommodate the TTC detour
    • Traffic control personnel will be present while traffic bridge removal work takes place
    • Local access will be maintained from the south end of the road closure and from the east end of the lane-way

    TTC Details

    • TTC bus route 14 Glencairn will be on detour for the duration of the closure.  The westbound bus will turn right onto Russell Hill Rd, left onto Eglinton Ave and continue north on Chaplin Cres.  The eastbound bus will turn left onto Eglinton Ave, right onto Russell Hill Rd and continue south on Chaplin Cres.  For more information, visit www.ttc.ca.

    Vehicle and station disinfection

    Since January, the TTC has been performing significant additional cleaning and disinfection of all public places with a focus on touch and grab points, such as buttons, railings, handles and straps. All stations, buses, streetcars, trains are receiving extra attention.

    Reminders to keep everyone safe when travelling on public transit:

    •TTC and Toronto Public Health strongly recommend

    that all customers wear a face covering when taking

    transit .

    •If you’re sick, stay home.

    •Wash your hands when you get to your destination.

    •We’re all in this together.

    Safety on the TTC

    The TTC looks a lot different these days. A number of measures have been taken to enhance safety for our customers:

    • hand sanitizers are installed at all subway stations;

    • cash, token and TTC ticket fares are suspended – pay fares with your PRESTO card;

    • COVID-19 screening posters are up at the entrances to all stations;

    • disinfecting our vehicles twice a day including hand holds and touch points;

    • supporting our vulnerable communities with additional special constable patrols on vehicles and in stations;

    • providing additional service on our busiest routes;

    • providing masks, face shields, gloves and hand sanitizers to all our frontline employees;

    • partnering with the City in promoting COVID-19 public health messaging on all of our communication channels.

    Line 1: Eglinton to King single day closure May 23

    There will be no subway service on Line 1 between Eglinton and King stations on Saturday, May 23, 2020 for Automatic Train Control signal system installation.
     
    Shuttle buses will operate. As King Station is not yet an accessible station, customers requiring an accessible connection should exit the train at Union Station and see any TTC customer service employee to request assistance.

    Summerhill, College, Dundas, Queen and King stations will be closed. All other stations will remain open for the purchase of PRESTO fares and connection to surface routes.

    AVENUE STATION CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

    Mining operations are ongoing at the Secondary Entrance and occur 24 hours a day, five days a week. Read the construction notice for more detail.
     

    What Work is Taking Place

    • Mining excavation continues between Eastbourne Avenue and Lascelles Boulevard. This sequence includes drilling roof supports, removal of earth and coating exposed surfaces with shotcrete. Mining excavation is expected to be complete in late-May 2020. 
    • Demolition of the inner station walls will continue intermittently through to late-May 2020. 
    •  Approximately three concrete pours take place every week lasting 12 – 18 hours each.  The concrete forms the station structure below grade.  Some pours require temporary use of the westbound curb lane at Main Entrance.  The lane will re-open after each pour is complete. 

    What Work is Coming Up?

    • As early as Saturday, May 9, 2020 crews will perform the next concrete pour at the Main Entrance, temporarily occupying the westbound curb lane.  
    • Once mining excavation is complete, permanent works, including final lining and concrete pours, will begin east of the Secondary Entrance. 

    Hours of Work:

    • As early as Monday, May 4, 2020 crews at Avenue Station will shift to a 24/5 work schedule.
    • Crews are expected to operate on a 24-hour basis Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
    • Occasionally, crews may be required to work through the weekends to complete critical activities.

     

    Mining Information


    General mining activities occur in a continuous sequence, including drilling roof supports, excavation under the roof supports and spraying of concrete to finalize exposed areas underground. Within the excavation portion of the sequence, periodic removal of concrete sections of the existing tunnels is required as well as periodic chipping of temporary concrete linings. When possible, crews complete higher impact works during the day, however due to the sequence nature of the work and the engineering requirements related to ground stability and cavern integrity, sometimes noticeable activity occurs overnight. 

    Noise & Vibration Mitigation


    Noise and vibration impacts to your building depend on your proximity to the source and how the vibrations travel through the soil and interact with the foundation and structure of your building. Crosslinx Transit Solutions has implemented several noise reductions measures on site to mitigate the impact felt by the community during mining activities. Enclosures are used to cover equipment like generators and pumps, silencers are used to reduce noise from fans, and delivery routes and times are selected to minimize disruption – just to name a few.

    Concrete Pours
    • Approximately three (3) concrete pours per week

    • 12 – 18 hours each

    • The next pour with lane occupancy is tentatively scheduled for Saturday May 9, 2020.

    Wall Demolition
    • Demolition of temporary walls between Eastbourne Avenue and Lascelles Boulevard
    • Wall demolition will take place on a 24-hours basis, with crews operating 5- days a week.
    • Intermittent wall demolition is expected to continue through to late-May 2020.

    Dewatering Well Maintenance
    • Periodic maintenance of dewatering wells requires a short duration closures around wells in the roadway or sidewalk

     

    • Use of a compressor and, occasionally, a hydro-vacuum truck is required.

     
    • Maintenance will occur periodically over the course of construction
    • 9am to 4pm

     

    Monitoring Work
    Equipment installed in various locations around the station are used to monitor ground movement during construction.
    Read the construction notice for more detail.
    • A drill is used to install monitoring equipment around the station area.

     

    • Short duration closures are used to obtain readings from the monitors.

     

    • If on the sidewalk, pedestrians may be rerouted around the work area

     
    • Periodic installations will occur over the course of construction

     

    • Readings will occur regularly over the course of construction
    • Future installation dates to be confirmed

To safely carry out the works, westbound traffic on Eglinton Avenue West will be reduced to one lane at the Main Entrance. Each pour will begin at 6:00 a.m. and take approximately ten (10) hours to complete.  After each pour is complete, the lane will re-open.

    There will be no subway service on Line 1 between Lawrence and St Clair stations on Sunday, May 10 for Automatic Train Control signal system installation.

    What Work is Taking Place?

    • On Wednesday May 6, 2020, Chaplin Crescent will be closed between Eglinton Avenue West and Russell Hill Road, and the laneway south of Eglinton Avenue between Chaplin Crescent and Russell Hill Road will be closed behind Toronto Fire Station 135 (641 Eglinton Avenue West) while crews install a tower crane.  Emergency service vehicles will be permitted through the closure.  TTC buses will be detoured onto Russell Hill Road.  Eglinton Avenue will remain open while the crane is installed. No thru traffic will be permitted through the laneway, however, property access will be maintained from the east end of the laneway.  The crane will be in place for approximately one (1) year and will be used to lift equipment and material in and out of the station box and entrances. The crane will not swing live loads over adjacent properties or the sidewalk.

    Hours of Work

    •  Wednesday May 6, 2020 from 4:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
    • Construction takes place on a 24 hour basis, Monday through Sunday – read the construction notice here

    Upcoming Concrete Pours at Chaplin Station Tertiary Entrance

    What Work is Taking Place?

    • In May and June 2020, several concrete pours will be carried out at the Chaplin Station Tertiary Entrance site.  The Tertiary Entrance is located on the south side of Eglinton Avenue West, east of Chaplin Crescent and adjacent the Toronto Fire Station 135 (641 Eglinton Avenue West).  The concrete will form the future walls and slabs of the entrance.  During each pour, concrete pumps will be setup around the work zone and concrete trucks will enter the site to deliver concrete.

    Hours of Work

    • Concrete pours at the Tertiary Entrance are scheduled for the following dates:

    Tuesday May 5, 2020
    Tuesday May 12, 2020
    Friday May 15, 2020
    Friday May 22, 2020

    • Concrete pours will begin as early as 5:00 a.m. and last for five or more hours
    • The schedule is tentative; dates are subject to change
    • This work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the event of inclement weather

    What to Expect

    • Noise from construction activity, including concrete trucks and equipment can be expected
    • Concrete pumps will be placed within work zones
    • Concrete trucks will queue within work zones and traffic tapers on Eglinton Ave and Chaplin Cres
    • Concrete trucks may access the work zone via the Chaplin-Russell Hill lane
    • 10+ concrete trucks per hour can be expected during each pour

    Traffic & Pedestrian Details

    • No change to the existing traffic conditions is anticipated during these pours.

    Upcoming Hydro Utility Installation Work at Berwick Avenue

    What Work is Taking Place?

    Beginning in early May 2020, crews will perform hydro utility installation work in the existing work zone on Berwick Avenue and in the Berwick-Hillsdale laneway.  A hydro chamber will be constructed and the north half of the laneway will be trenched for cable installation.  Once complete, the area will be restored.

     

     

    Hours of Work

    • Early May 2020 for approximately two (2) weeks

    • Work will take place between 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

    • This work may be rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances

     

    What to Expect

    • Noise from construction activity, including trucks and heavy equipment can be expected

    • Trenching in the north half of the laneway can be expected

    • All property access is expected to be maintained, though vehicles and pedestrians may have to enter the laneway from either side depending on the location of the work

    • Expect delays when travelling in the vicinity of Berwick Ave during this work

     

    Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts

    • The existing work zone will remain in place

    • No through access in the Berwick-Hillsdale laneway will be permitted during each shift

    • At the end of each shift, the trenches will be plated and through access will be restored

    • Access to Canada Square parking lot, 2180 Yonge St loading dock and the TTC Bus Bay will be maintained

    • Vehicles and pedestrians may experience delays when travelling through the area

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY ISSUES

As we all know our neighbourhood is subject to serious development pressure, and development issues have occupied much of the board’s time. Among these issues are:

Community Development Committee of Adjustment – Single Family Homes

The OPA keeps a close eye on applications for home renovations and tear- downs in our neighbourhood.

We receive details about applications from the Committee including a description of the proposed changes and the deadline for submitting to the committee. Metrolinx – Eglinton LRT

The OPA is involved in the ongoing process of the development of the new Light Rail Transit line in our area.

One major concern for the community is that Eglinton Avenue is to have restricted lanes westbound between Oriole Parkway and Braemar Avenue for the construction of the Avenue Road Station.

The proposals as detailed below will last until 2021.

The businesses on the north side will have very restricted access and visibility.

The second concern is that Metrolinx in their initial proposal wished to ‘clear cut’ the area on the south side of the North Toronto Community Center between the eastern driveway and the western boundary beside the ‘Art Barn’ building. The area is to be used for storage and construction vehicles

The OPA community involvement is:

  • We attend meetings on behalf of the membership and community as well as sit on a ‘working group’ Chaired by Councillor Cristin Carmichael-Greb (Ward 16) and as supported by our Councillor Josh Matlow ( Ward 22).
  • The working group is comprised of elected officials; Senior City of Toronto Staff including Metrolinx and Crosslinx staff. The local residents associations are represented by the Eglinton Avenue Road Community Association: the Eglinton Park Ratepayers Association as well as the OPA.
  • We will provide updates via our Twitter and Facebook Accounts as well our email subscribers as they come available.
