The 53 Division Fraud Unit would like to make the public aware of a TAXI SCAM taking place within our Communities.

Please read this bulletin regarding recent taxi scams. The suspects are active in areas of Yonge and Eglinton and Mt Pleasant and Eglinton.

These young south Asian suspects are using Covid-19 as an excuse to scam the victims. One suspect stands on the sidewalk and the other suspect remains in the driver seat of the fake taxi. The suspect on the sidewalk stops the victim, saying that the driver does not accept cash and asks for help. The victim is provided cash, then asked to use their debit card to pay for the taxi fare in exchange.

The victim gives his/her card to the driver to make the payment and enters his/her pin code to the fake machine. The driver then swaps the bank card with a similar card and the victims walks away.

Later, the suspects use the stolen debit card to empty the victim’s bank account in less than 24 hours.

If you have been a victim of this scam, or have information about the suspects, please report it to Police or Crime Stoppers.

TPS Call 416-808-2222 Crime Stoppers Call 1-800-222-TIPS

If you have questions, please contact PC Timothy Somers, 53 Division Community Safety Officer by calling 416-808-5337.

On Monday August 9th at approximately 8:30AM two senior members of the Oriole Park community were assaulted while walking their dogs on the north side of Chaplin Crescent between Highbourne and Oriole Parkway.

The assailant was apparently in his mid-20’s and riding a skateboard on the sidewalk. This person has been observed in the past riding south on Avenue Road and East on Chaplin in the past at the same time in the morning.

A New Town Centre for Midtown Toronto FINAL 7 June 2021 (1).pdf

The Midtown Ratepayers Associations - Oriole Park , Eglinton Park ,Avenue Road Eglinton, South Eglinton Ratepayers, as well as various Condominium corporations have been meeting for the past 6 months to develop a vision for the Canada Square site.

With the aid of an experienced City provided Facilitator the attached report has been prepared and submitted to Toronto City Planning for their review and inclusion as applicable in their report.

This is the community consensus of  the future for the site but does not reflect our Oriole Park Association concerns as to traffic management and allied issues. Your Association is pursuing our specific needs as expressed by the community separately.

As we all know our neighbourhood is subject to serious development pressure, and development issues have occupied much of the board’s time. Among these issues are:

Community Development Committee of Adjustment – Single Family Homes

The OPA keeps a close eye on applications for home renovations and tear- downs in our neighbourhood.

We receive details about applications from the Committee including a description of the proposed changes and the deadline for submitting to the committee. We forward information about homes in our area to a special email list. You can subscribe here: Oriole Park Association - Committee of Adjustment notices.

Metrolinx – Eglinton LRT

The OPA is involved in the ongoing process of the development of the new Light Rail Transit line in our area.

One major concern for the community is that Eglinton Avenue is to have restricted lanes westbound between Oriole Parkway and Braemar Avenue for the construction of the Avenue Road Station.

The proposals as detailed below will last until 2021.

The businesses on the north side will have very restricted access and visibility.

The second concern is that Metrolinx in their initial proposal wished to ‘clear cut’ the area on the south side of the North Toronto Community Center between the eastern driveway and the western boundary beside the ‘Art Barn’ building. The area is to be used for storage and construction vehicles

The OPA community involvement is:

  • We attend meetings on behalf of the membership and community as well as sit on a ‘working group’ Chaired by Councillor Cristin Carmichael-Greb (Ward 16) and as supported by our Councillor Josh Matlow ( Ward 22).
  • The working group is comprised of elected officials; Senior City of Toronto Staff including Metrolinx and Crosslinx staff. The local residents associations are represented by the Eglinton Avenue Road Community Association: the Eglinton Park Ratepayers Association as well as the OPA.
  • We will provide updates via our Twitter and Facebook Accounts as well our email subscribers as they come available.
